I should probably come up with a better name for this – it’s a pretty boring name as it is, and it doesn’t look like I’ll ever manage it in three hours anyway ;)

Tonight’s piece took just over five hours to produce.

Last week I promised they wouldn’t all be metal, and I nearly honoured that promise this time. It started off so well, piano setting a mournful, plodding pace with a slightly eerie theme over the top, then into a vaguely 70s sound, with piano and bass, and a slow echoey guitar melody – but somehow in the end the double bass drum, power chords and big solo still managed to make their way in. Though in fairness this one ends up more as hard rock than metal – very much chord based, and the guitars add bulk rather than driving the sound themselves.

Once again I’ve relied on improvisation, rather than writing a real melody – but hopefully I’ll kick that habit some time soon ;)
On listening to last week’s one again, I think this one is actually quite a bit tighter – I have less overall complaints with the way it came out than I did last week. The guitar in the second section could be a little better – the timing’s all over the place when I try to play the main theme, and I didn’t really know where I was going after that.
I think I pulled off the solo at the end OK. There’s some flubbed notes and some slightly less than ideal choices in places, but overall it fits quite well, and doesn’t obviously run out of steam like last week’s one does.

I really like the intro, particularly when I add the viola and cello (which were a last minute addition). I might have to explore that idea and sound further some other time.

Anyway, enough from me…I’ll have another one next week.
