Tuesday Challenge #3

(You see I’ve given up pretending it’s three hours – though even Tuesday is in doubt this time).

Well….this one was a marathon effort – finally finished after 8 hours of effort….partially because I was silly enough to write lyrics and sing.
It’s a blues based hard rock piece with unashamed influence from Jethro Tull among others. Though I quite clearly demonstrate that I’m not Ian Anderson.
The drums are the important bit in this one – it started with a drum beat, and everything else layered on top of that.
Though in the end I think I lost the original beat when I re-recorded the drums – but that doesn’t matter.

I would like to have time to go back over the drums and either re-record them again, and leave them unquantized, or carefully go through and humanize them a bit more. I didn’t do too badly when I recorded them, but unfortunately the timing was still far enough out that quantizing was necesary, and I didn’t have time to do anything about it, so there’s a few places where things didn’t turn out as good as it could have been, but overall it’s not too bad.

The lyrics are pretty bad – it’s kind of four or five separate ideas just cramed in to one. Any semblance to coherency is coincidental.

My flute playing is improving, it’s getting much easier to get what I want out of it now. The flute stuff in this piece is still pretty rough, but then it’s all rough so that’s not suprising. What is suprising is that I’m actually in tune in one or two places ;)

The guitars were interesting to do, since I’m using a vintage 60s and 70s hard rock guitar sound instead of my normal sound. It gave me quite a challenge when it came to mixing time, as I wasn’t sure what to do with them, as that sound doesn’t take up anywhere near as much space in the mix as my usual one does, so that was another thing that added to the length of time it took – trying to figure out what was missing, and how to add it. In the end, I just threw in a piano. I would have liked to have used a hamond organ sound, but it really needed the real thing if I was going to go down that route.

Anyway. That’s enough for tonight…neeeeeed sleep.
Next week I’m going to do something simple. I don’t want to make a habit out of finishing on Wednesday….heh
