The trouble with weekends…

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

…is that they serve two mutually incompatible purposes.

Firstly, they’re for sitting around and doing absolutely nothing in…or just doing whatever you feel like.
Secondly, they’re for Getting Stuff Done.

For me, number one usually wins out every time, meaning that by next weekend there’s even more Stuff to be Got Done, which gives me this horrible feeling of guilt and obligation when I don’t do them, which means that even though I still only do number one, I don’t enjoy it.
bah!

Ubuntu + Samba + Vista = Fail

What’s the quickest, and easiest way to share data between an Ubuntu machine and a Vista machine?

Fuck you Samba, fuck you Vista, and fuck you Ubuntu.

Ok, so I’m weak

The lure of a $99 upgrade to Sonar Producer edition was too much for me. And I’ve only had Studio edition for a day now…
Of course, the amount of savings is tempered significantly by being hit twice for shipping – but it’s still not bad.

late again

Another Tuesday, another day in Sydney – so I’ll aim for Thursday again this week.
Also, I have the Australia Post notification that my shiny new copy of Sonar 7 Studio Edition has arrived – but sadly I won’t be in a position to pick it up till Thursday. bah!

(What the hell is the point of having the packages only available between 9-5? If between 9 and 5 was a convenient time to pick up the package from my local post office, then I would’ve been home when it was delivered in the first place! – though to be fair, if I hadn’t had to go to Sydney today then I would have been home)

This one is very short I’m afraid – once again I came up with a nice idea, but completely failed to develop it. However, since the spirit of this exercise is to produce something no matter how short, here it is.
It’s a quartet for cello, two flutes and clarinet – though it’s effectively just a simple melody for cello, with some backing from the winds.
I did try to develop it further – it was going to be for a small ensemble – Cello, Double Bass, Violin, Viola, and the two flutes and clarinet, however I just couldn’t come up with anything to follow this section, and rather than frustrate myself for the rest of the evening, decided to cut my losses and just release the first section.
It does have the saving grace of having real flutes and clarinet – I’m getting close to figuring out how to do a decent job of recording them. This still isn’t quite there, but it’s suitable for this piece.

Nothing for today, I’m afraid – a trip to Sydney meant I didn’t get back till 8ish, and also sucked what little inspiration I may have had out of me.
I might give it proper go on Thursday.

And now for something completely different!

This one nearly didn’t happen….I spent about four hours messing around and ended up with something so dreary and uninspired, and that so stubbornly refused to gel into anything complete that I gave up in disgust.

Then an hour later, after having listened to some of NIN’s Ghosts I I went back and managed to get something out in less than three hours.
It’s short, and it’s minimal – but I’m rather happy with it, as it very effectively embodies the principle of this excercise – to actually get something done, no matter how short, unpolished, or just plain bad, so as to stop the stifling effect of obsessive perfectionism.

Incidentally, the first few hours weren’t a total waste, as the piano is based on what I came up with the first time round.

So after more than two years, I’ve started the Tuesday Challenge thing (which I still need to find a better name for) again.
This one is just a short improvisation on clarinet and guitar, with a Pink Floyd influenced feel – so well and truly in my comfort zone.

The clarinet is of course the new thing – I acquired one on the weekend, and have the loan of it for the next couple of years (until Caitlin has to give back her school provided one, at which time this one will become hers). I’ve nearly got the hang of it now, apart from some difficulty with the upper register and the weird between register fingerings, although my saxophonist history can be rather clearly heard – it sounds more like a soparano sax at times than a clarinet.

Anyway, now that I’m back on track musically, I’ll endeavour to make next week’s piece a little more adventurous.
